Focus on…Construction
The construction industry is under many different pressures. Climate change fears have governments worldwide looking to the construction sector to be energy efficient, and, as a potentially hazardous industry, construction businesses are also under pressure to prove the highest levels of health and safety and to strive for improvement. In addition, there are the financial strains of the recession.
One answer to these different pressures is to turn to quality for help. Louise Jones, senior quality engineer for Balfour Beatty, is clear about the benefits. “At the moment quality is all about integrated systems. A focus on safety and the environment is hugely important and by integrating ISO9001, ISO14001 and OHSAS 18001 everybody can work to deliver these objectives.”
Quality in construction is not a new concept, but is has gained a higher profile over recent years. Louise explains: “Quality is being taken more seriously because it reduces costs and gives confidence to the client. The role of quality is to ensure you’re delivering what the client wants by having the right systems in place.”

Design Tip: SEO and Your Navigation Tree
If you have a large Web site, then you've probably organized it into a tree structure. You've probably also added search capability to the site. Unfortunately, these two features can be enemies of each other.
Getting lost within a Web site is a common complaint from Internet users. Visitors often come across a useful page while browsing, and then forget where to find it by their next visit to the site. If the structure of the Web site isn't clearly defined, finding a page again can be an impossible chore.
To get around this problem, Webmasters organize their sites into some sort of logical navigation system. That structure often takes the form of a tree, with tree branches defining different subjects and categories. Webmasters spend a lot of time defining these tree structures to make sure they work.
In some ways a search engine is a barrier to navigation.
But, after spending a lot of time defining this structure, Webmasters promptly short-circuit it by providing search capability.
Search is a handy for any big site, but in some ways it's the enemy of good navigation. Yes, it helps visitors find information the first time, but it gives them precious little help in finding it again. Search engines lead people to pages without showing them their context within the rest of the site. If a visitor finds a page through a search, finding it again means having to remember exactly what search query they entered the first time around. That's not an easy thing to do.
For that reason, it's a good idea to mark each of your pages to show where it lies in your site's navigation system. If your site is organized as a tree, then each page should show the path back to the home page.
For example, suppose your page gives installation instructions for a software package. You might label it with this navigation mark:
Home / Software / User's Manual / Install
Put this navigation label near the top or bottom of your page for easy reference.
If visitors navigate your site by drilling down categories, this type of navigation mark is useful. If visitors navigate your site using a search engine, it's absolutely essential. The navigation mark shows the page's location within the site. So visitors who jump to the page from a list of search results have an idea where it lies within the overall structure. That gives them a chance to find it again later.

Isle of Wight - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The heritage of the island is a major asset, which has for many years kept its economy going. Holidays focused on natural heritage, including both wildlife and geology, are becoming a growing alternative to the traditional seaside resort holiday. The latter has been in decline in the United Kingdom domestic market, due to the increased affordability of air travel to alternative destinations.
Tourism is still the largest industry on the island. In 1999, the 130,000 island residents were host to 2.7 million visitors. Of these, 1.5 million stayed overnight, and 1.2 million visits were day visits. Only 150,000 of these visitors were international visitors. Between 1993 and 2000, visits increased at a rate of 3% per year, on average.

Twitter has increased 10-fold
UK Internet traffic to Twitter has increased 10-fold over past last 12 months, according to Hitwise. For the week ending 17/01/09 Twitter ranked as the 291st most visited website in the UK. And this is before that Stephen Fry and Jonathan Ross moment on BBC one, when there was a almost a complete minute when Stephen and Jonathan discuss twitter and what it is. Outside of the technorati and alpha geeks, Twitter is starting to attract celebs including John Cleese, Britiney Spears and Bobby Llewellyn among many others. On Backstage we're also seeing much more projects using Twitter as the network. This is certainly a trend to watch for the future.

What is a gravatar?
A gravatar, or globally recognised avatar, is quite simply an avatar image that follows you from blog to blog appearing beside your name when you comment on gravatar enabled sites. Avatars help identify your posts on web forums, so why not on blogs?
